A Purple Season at The Farmers’ Market

By on Mar 31, 2012, 9:16 am in Food and Drink, Seasonal Celebrations | 3 comments

Ever notice that a season’s produce is closley identified with a color? A few weeks ago- about mid winter-I was browsing through my local farmer’s market, taking pics. When I got home I noticed that pretty much everything I shot was purple-ly/mauve-y.

A Big Leaf of Purple Mustard

Red Collards

And Purple Kale

Purple Kale

Purple Cauliflower

and Cauliflower

Spring Onions

even the new Spring Onions had purple roots

Sweet Peas

and let’s not forget the Sweet Peas- see what I mean?

Cat on the Back

Well, this except for this cat resting on a shopper’s shoulders. Guess they didn’t get the memo…

Come back for spring’s colors.

  1. I never thought of fall being a purple season before but it is. We planted the purple kale this year and it looks beautiful. I never thought of having a purple garden with cauliflower in it, too. Usually I think of fall as red and orange because of apples and pumpkins. This gives me a whole new perspective of the season.

  2. I like shopping at farmer’s markets since the fruit and vegetables are usually more affordable priced than those you get in the supermarket. It’s a good way to save money.

You are also more likely to see unusual produce-such as the lovely examples you have- when you head to a venue like this to do your shopping. In addition to saving money and seeing unique produce, you always get fresher fruit and vegetables when you buy directly from the people who grow them.
